SuperBowl Controversy

As a Hispanic female in America, I used to struggle to point out people on television with whom I could relate to. When the Coca-Cola Ad from the Super Bowl had surfaced, it was exciting to see how many people around the country could now identify with something on TV, though only under a minute or so. The controversy that followed, however, was of a different magnitude than one could ever predict. It was shocking to hear and see just how upset the advertisement made viewers. I love the way Janeen was able to capture this, along with the full picture in her essay- the good, the bad, and the ugly- without bias. The very country that prides itself on diversity and freedom was not so accepting of a simple commercial advertisement, and that is downright shameful. It is a new generation and a different time, but it seems that the age old view on stereotypes and judgement is still very much alive.

  1. I do not understand the controversy surrounding the commercial, either. It does not sound like something that deserves all the hate it received.

  2. I too think it was idiotic. All that controversy for just a commercial. Some people just need to learn to be more accepting an appreciate all the diversity and cultures we have in our country.

  3. i agree strongly! It is sad that something that was representing togetherness received negative feedback towards the individuals and their culture.

  4. I believe the same thing as far as the country's rather low acceptance to change.

  5. I agree with you in the fact that we claim to have evolved so much in the years; however, our mindsets seem to still be from the 1940's. Good job.

  6. Isn't diversity a good thing? I don't know why some people felt so threatened by it.

  8. Your post is spot-on.

The commercial shined a light on everything that still divides us in this nation. Hopefully in the future, we will be rid of some of those ancient ideals.
