SuperBowl Controversy
As a Hispanic female in America, I used to struggle to point out people on television with whom I could relate to. When the Coca-Cola Ad from the Super Bowl had surfaced, it was exciting to see how many people around the country could now identify with something on TV, though only under a minute or so. The controversy that followed, however, was of a different magnitude than one could ever predict. It was shocking to hear and see just how upset the advertisement made viewers. I love the way Janeen was able to capture this, along with the full picture in her essay- the good, the bad, and the ugly- without bias. The very country that prides itself on diversity and freedom was not so accepting of a simple commercial advertisement, and that is downright shameful. It is a new generation and a different time, but it seems that the age old view on stereotypes and judgement is still very much alive.

Case Studies
Case studies are something that, before this class, I was not familiar with. I am used to my safe little comfort zone of research papers and narratives. Venturing outside of that for this project will be interesting for me. I think especially because it's about a subject matter that truly interests me (my family), it will be easier for me to take on. I believe that the purpose of this paper is to discover more about our personality and quirks through the relationships we have with our significant others, whether it be family or friends, or another social circle. I am actually really excited to delve further into it!

Being your own person.
For class we watched two videos (on how it is that you carry and present yourself, along with your relationships with siblings) can form who you are as a person. Both of these videos really made me laugh; most of the time, it was spot on. Being the "baby" of the family (my immediate family, along with being the youngest grandchild), I had received special treatment from my grandparents and parents. My grandmother would spoil me rotten, and would barely try to conceal her favoritism for me and my brother. On the same token, my mom really shows preference for my older brother (the first born), while my dad will do the same for me, proving the video correct.
While I agreed with many of the points made by the videos, I do have to disagree on some aspects. I do not completely believe that if you are second, third, fourth, etc. born, that you are genetically bound to be less successful than the almighty oldest. As far as personality itself goes, you determine who it is that you want to be. Your passions, that inner drive inside that fuels your soul is what your life should be determined by. It's who you are, want to be, and strive to be. However, putting this mindset into an individual will alter their thoughts into truly believing that that is their fate, and will eventually succumb to such tendencies.

This brings me to my next point on the power stance video- I 100% agree with every word that woman spoke. My love for Lady Gaga had me believing the mantra "Fake it until you become it" since 2008, waaaay before I even heard of this video. Lady Gaga, a struggling artist, described how she would strut down the streets like a superstar until she truly became one. That little snippet of the countless other inspirational speeches she has given really struck a chord with me; I have living by it ever since. I believe that with the right mindset, you could will yourself to move mountains even with your feet planted on the ground.

Hi! My name is Ava and these are the three traits that describe me for my COM102 class. :)
